Choosing an LED flood light for a real project is rarely about picking a brand. The hard part is knowing what to decide first, and in what order — so the light meets the required illumination, stays on budget, and passes acceptance without a redesign.

The 5-Step Selection Process

The most common mistake is to start with “how many watts do I need?”. Watts are the last thing you calculate, not the first. The correct order works backwards from the application:

Application → Target lux → Wattage → Optics & mounting → Specs & certification.

Get the order right and every later decision falls into place. Below is each step.

Step 1 — Define the Application

Everything starts here. The application decides the required brightness, the beam type, the mounting method, and ultimately the wattage. A 2,000 m² parking lot, a competition basketball court, and a port yard each need a completely different setup — even at the same area.

Before anything else, fix three things about your site: what activity happens there, how big the area is, and how the lights will be mounted. These three answers drive every step that follows.

Step 2 — Set the Target Lux

Brightness is defined by illuminance (lux) on the surface — not by the wattage of the fixture. So before sizing any light, decide the lux level your application requires (for example, a parking lot and a stadium target very different levels, set by standards such as IES RP-8 and EN 12464-2).

This is the real design target. Everything downstream is calculated to hit it.

Step 3 — Determine the Wattage

Wattage is a result, not a starting point. Once you know your target lux and area, you calculate the total lumens required, then convert to wattage based on the fixture’s efficacy. Picking a round number like “300W” without this step is how projects end up over- or under-lit.

Step 4 — Choose Optics & Mounting

Beam angle and mounting height must be decided together — they jointly determine whether your light lands evenly or leaves hotspots and dark zones. A narrow beam on a low pole over-lights the center; a wide beam on a high mast spills light everywhere. Match the beam to the throw distance, then set the mounting height and spacing to keep uniformity in range.

Step 5 — Verify Specs & Certifications

Before you order, run a final check on the specifications that decide reliability and whether the project will accept the product:

Common Procurement Mistakes

Even experienced buyers slip on these. Avoiding them is half of choosing correctly:

  • Selecting wattage without optical design. The right total lumens with the wrong beam angle still fails the lux requirement.
  • Ignoring mounting height. The same fixture at the wrong height creates hotspots or dark gaps and fails uniformity.
  • Ignoring driver quality. A cheap driver is the most common cause of early failure, regardless of the LED chip.
  • Comparing on unit price alone. A lower sticker price with poor efficacy costs more over the project’s life — judge total cost of ownership.
  • Missing photometric files. Without IES/LM-80 files, many project owners and consultants will not approve the product.

Run through these in order — if you can tick all five, your specification is sound:
